Periyar
(15/16 Jan 1997)

The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and Tiger Reserve at Thekkady comprises 300 sq miles of lush tropical forest surrounding an artificial lake created by the British in 1895.
A relaxing and enjoyable way of seeing the place is to hop on a boat.

No sign of tigers but otters (on the left), elephants, water buffalo, deer, turtles, and other wildlife are easy to spot.
The many birds include kingfishers, cormorants, and the egret sat on the right.

The following morning we walked through the forest but wish someone had warned us about the leaches we met on our way.

After the poverty of Tamil Nadu the drive down to Cochin was a suprise. The towns we passed yesterday had shops selling string, today 3 piece suites were out on display.

Some of the beautiful scenery we passed on our way. Huge tea and coffee plantations lined either side of the road.

We rested for lunch by the road when we found somewhere to stop with some shade.
