The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and Tiger Reserve at Thekkady comprises 300 sq miles of lush tropical forest surrounding an artificial lake created by the British in 1895. |

| A relaxing and enjoyable way of seeing the place is to hop on a boat. |

No sign of tigers but otters (on the left), elephants, water buffalo, deer, turtles, and other wildlife are easy to spot. |

The following morning we walked through the forest but wish someone had warned us about the leaches we met on our way. |

After the poverty of Tamil Nadu the drive down to Cochin was a suprise. The towns we passed yesterday had shops selling string, today 3 piece suites were out on display. |
