Hampi
(27/28 Jan 1997)

Founded in 1336 in a spectacular natural setting Hampi was the greatest Hindu capital of it's time.

The building on the left is the elephant stables and must have housed a great many when it was used.

The statue of Narasimha (half man, half lion) was carved out of one piece of stone.
The musical pillars in the Vitthala temple deserve to be heard.

This sculpture of a chariot being pulled by an elephant dominates an entrance to the temple itself.

Just two examples of the wonderfull carvings which can be seen on every pillar and wall.
Covering 26 sq km on the south bank of the river Tungabhadra Hampi is a truly spectacular site.

We head north from Hospet to Bijapur, arriving not long after lunch.

In case you are wondering this is a pile of hand crafted cow pats left out to dry in the sun (they make a good fire).
