Bombay
(1/2 Feb 1997)

Bombay, despite it's contrasting poverty versus wealth, overcrowding, pollution and noise has an atmosphere which you can touch.

With a population of thirteen million it is not a small town (but why are they all out on the streets).

With half a day left there is little opportunity for sight seeing, but we still have plenty of rupees left in our pockets so we head for the shops.

Rickshaws are banned from the centre as are the cows (there are cow rather than dog catchers here).
But the taxis are cheap and provide a good way to get around.

Our hotel was close to the Gateway to India, Bombays port, near the bottom left of the map.
The journey to the airport was short but in the traffic of mid afternoon it took us three hours.

We passed through the slums on the left before reaching the peace and tranquility of the airports ring road.
There has been much we have seen on this journey but even more we have missed. We will be back before long needless to say (Dehli to Kathmandu has already been booked for early next year).
